“Private speech” refers to the kind of talking children (and adults) do when they aren’t trying to
talk to anyone else. You might use private speech when you ask yourself aloud, “What did I come
into the kitchen for again?” or “Where did I leave my keys?” Private speech is an important part of
language and learning development for preschoolers, because it helps them practice unfamiliar
kinds of language and reinforces ideas they are trying to remember.
